How To Put The iPhone X / 8 in DFU Mode : Easy Method – Putting older iPhones (iPhone 7 and below) into Device Firmware Update (DFU) Mode is a straightforward process. However, with the release of the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, things have drastically changed.
What Is DFU Mode?
Device Firmware Update (DFU) Mode on iDevice allows users to do low-level changes to the software running on the gadget. When an iOS device is in DFU mode, it is powered on, but its hasn’t booted up or loaded the operating system yet. Users can make changes to the operating system because it is not yet running.
When To Use DFU Mode?
When troubleshooting an iPad, an iPhone or an iPod Touch, users normally use the Recovery mode. This is true when the device is stuck in a loop after an iOS update. The device may also not run properly because of corrupted data thus recovery mode is also used to correct the problem.
Device Firmware Update (DFU) Mode is used to :
- Jailbreak or un-jailbreak a device.
- Uninstall an outdated (beta) version of the operating system.
- Downgrade the iOS version installed on the device.
- Do a low level restore on the iDevice using ipsw files.
Users who encounter errors with their apps or device after updating to a newer iOS version may need to use DFU mode, as mentioned, to restore functionality to their gadgets.

Step 2. Completely turn off your device but make sure that it is still plugged in into your computer and iTunes is still running.
Step 3. Press and hold the Side button (Power Button) on the devices for three seconds. You should see the Apple boot up screen. While holding the side button, press the Volume down button and hold both buttons down for ten seconds.

Step 5. With the ten seconds up, release the Side button but continue pressing the Volume down button for five more seconds. iTunes should open a message saying it has found a device in recovery mode. Check your device’s screen to see if its entirely black.
